The Yamaha YDP-166R is an 88-key cabinet-style digital piano finished in rosewood, designed for beginners and home practitioners seeking an authentic piano experience in a refined, furniture-quality enclosure. It suits those returning to piano after a break as well as students progressing through formal lessons, offering the feel and resonance of an acoustic instrument in a compact form suited to living spaces and apartments.

At the core of the YDP-166R is the GrandTouch-E™ weighted keyboard, which delivers a consistent, expressive response across a 10 mm key stroke and responds naturally to varied playing intensities — much like a grand piano action. The piano's sound engine samples the Yamaha CFX concert grand piano, capturing richly coloured tone across all registers. Virtual Resonance Modeling Lite (VRM Lite) simulates the complex string resonance of a grand piano, responding to both key and pedal input. Three pedals are provided — damper (with half-pedal support), sostenuto, and soft — mirroring a full acoustic grand piano setup. The amplification system comprises 20W × 2 stereo amplifiers driving 12 cm speakers fitted with diffuser grilles for clearer treble projection at a distance. Ten Voices are on board, including grand piano, electric piano, pipe organ, vibraphone, and strings, along with 353 preset songs drawn from classical repertoire and method books by Beyer, Burgmüller, Czerny, and Hanon.

The YDP-166R includes Bluetooth connectivity for wireless pairing with smart devices, enabling audio streaming and integration with the free Yamaha Smart Pianist app, which provides simplified controls, sheet music for all preset songs, practice support functions, and on-device recording. A Stereophonic Optimizer adjusts headphone output to simulate the natural spread of sound from an acoustic piano, and automatic volume control maintains a pleasant balance at any listening level. The instrument includes a matching bench and features gently rounded corners for safety across all age groups.
